Bluetooth set up easy, works with Apps.

Works a charm and working with the apps you can get will save you a bit of money at the Garage.

Brilliant tool: brings vehicle diagnostics into the realm of the non-mechanically minded

This ELM OBDII diagnostic reader arrived just in time to diagnose a fault in my father's 2004 car. He'd been assured by his garage that the warning lamp on his dashboard was 'nothing to worry about' and the garage simply reset it before each MOT, then it was fine for a short time before recurring. On inheriting the car, I was less convinced so used this OBD reader to determine what the problem was.The OBD reader plugs into the vehicle's OBD port which looks similar to a SCART socket and is normally found beneath the dashboard and is paired with a phone app such as Torque Lite (which is free). On plugging it in, switching on the ignition and pairing with the phone's app, a range of diagnostic codes can be read, either existing fault codes (where the fault has been triggered more than once) or pending codes (where the fault hasn't become a confirmed fault yet - some faults remain 'pending' until they have been triggered three times) along with, when the engine is running, a live stream of data including speed, fuel consumption data, running temperature, oil pressure, voltages and even logging a journey. In the case of my fault, this was read as a P0131 fault code, and the app then produced a web link to further information regarding the possible causes of the fault, ie "O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 1" and the steps taken to rectify it. The diagnosis was correct - a failed oxygen sensor which was also causing the engine to run a little rough and, on one occasion, lose power. I ordered a replacement, watched a YouTube video on how to fit it and at a cost of £39 for the replacement sensor, 22mm socket and copper grease I avoided the £297 quoted by a local garage by fitting it myself which took just 10 minutes including clearing the fault code on completion and warning lamp has remained off.I have no mechanical expertise and using the ELM OBD reader shows that car repairs don't necessarily have to be completed by a garage. Many are actually very simple and don't require any skill and although some drivers are scared by the thought of 'computers' the OBD II reader actually makes a diagnosis for the non-mechanically minded driver and gives the choice of a DIY repair or facing a garage bill. In some cases there may be no alternative when specialist equipment is needed but the ELM OBD reader brings simple, yet still pricey, repairs into the realm of the non-mechanic DIY'er. The ELM OBD reader will also clear and reset fault codes.A definitely recommended purchase and incredible value for money. My family and I now have one for each vehicle and we wouldn't be without them.

Neat bit of kit- with a design problem

So assuming you have at least some knowledge of how to use one of these, this is a really useful device. Car recognised it immediately and linked to my smartphone via Bluetooth no problems. Choosing a suitable app is important, using the free versions gives you most of the info you need. Now the big design fault. In my Corsa D, the socket is sunk into the bottom of the dash- there's no room around it which means once you've plugged this in, it's almost impossible to get out again. It should have handle to help pull it out.

      Cheap garbage

Only worked for about 5 seconds each time it was plugged in. Replaced with slightly more expensive unit that works all the time. Cheap garbage.

Cool gadget which helps you read your vehicle's fault codes

Now, this little beauty could save you a lot of money. Simply plug it into your OB port (underneath your dashboard, usually) and hey presto! You can interpret all the fault codes in your car, without having to go to the garage, thus potentially saving you a lot of time and money. Of course, it's not as simple as that : you need to download an app to read the data, and there are two ones available, so you need to play around a little to work out which is best. And, of course it just tells you what is wrong: it doesn't actually fix anything! But it's still a very handy little diagnostic tool which is really helpful. And under fifteen quid too. So far, I've just used it for amusement and to Check out operating Data. If something goes wrong, I will update to see how much use it actually is in practical terms. But I reckon its well worth having. Easy to install, just plug and play, easy to use:what's not to like?
