Description

Falling pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena (Judi Dench) was sent to the convent of Roscrea to be looked after as a "fallen woman". When her baby was only a toddler, he was taken away by the nuns for adoption in America. Philomena spent the next fifty years searching for him but with no success. Then she met Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a world-weary political journalist who happened to be intrigued by her story. Together they set off to America on a journey that would not only reveal the extraordinary story of Philomena's son, but also create an unexpectedly close bond between Philomena and Martin. The film is a compelling narrative of human love and loss that ultimately celebrates life, showing that there is laughter even in the darkest places.

"Care or Abuse"? A real eye-opener of a film

A heartfelt true story of child abuse and manipulation of "facts" to protect those in "power". A must see film which exposed, and exposes still, the cover-ups within the "care" and child adoption sector".

Both a warm and sad film

A touching film addressing a painful history which has been a reality for many women. Judi Dench is fabulous as is Steve Coogan. If you enjoy films dealing with the human condition and social issues you’ll enjoy this film.

      Excellent film

Sadly this is not only a true story; but I know of other women this has happened to.

Having and R/C mother and a Protestant father, I have attended both churches and won't have anything to do with either of them anymore.

This film just re-confirms the abusive power of the Roman Catholic Church.

Beautifully acted and first class photography too.
Interesting role for Steve Coogan - I hate his TV shows with the Partridge character with a vengeance.
Coogan comes over as an upper-class self centred unpleasant idiot - who is forced by circumstances to change his style and write about real people instead.

he comes over as very genuinely concerned, but more so because of his journalistic past and looking for the truth when given the run around.
It takes a while to believe he cares for the characters experiences; but what comes over very clearly is the absolute evil that the Irish R/C church forced on innocent people.

      Well done that man.

      Gentle, pleasant but lacking something

On paper it has all the right ingredients for an engaging film - Steve Coogan, Judi Dench, Stephen Frears and a true-life, tearjerking story. And it's a pleasant enough watch, and nothing stand outs in terms of faults, but it just lacks something.

      A great true life story

I really enjoyed this film, very sad in parts but also upliftingIt opens your eyes to the fact that young girls of that era new nothing about the facts of life and how they were punished for not being educated in it.Would certainly recommend

      Great movie

I watched this movie with my sister and brother in law and was a bit nervous that he wouldn't like it as I thought it might be a women's story, but he like my sister and I thought this was a real good movie and well acted by Steve Coogan. I always just thought he was a comedian but he played this part real well. What a sad yet inspiring story and it makes you wonder just how man women this happened to, My thoughts go out to the real Philomena and all the other women who suffered because they were pregnant before marriage.

      A very slightly flawed gem.

My wife (not easy to please) and I enjoyed this film. The two leading actors were splendid and the dialogue was crisp and often very funny. I did feel sometimes that Philomena was too naive - she had after all been a nurse for many years, and she was on the ball with homosexuality, (her Irish accent slipped from time to time, by the way), but over all she was a delight, and Steve Coogan was the perfect foil to her.I have two reservations; i I don't think I am likely to watch it again; ii unusual turns of events became predictable, almost as if the plot was crying wolf.Recommended with minor reservations.

A relaxing afternoon with a dvd

Just watched this the other day it was a true story but I loved it how attitudes have changed now compared to Philomenas days a great film to watch. It arrived on time was safely packaged and well worth the money indeed.

      Really good film

An excellent film with brilliant acting from Steve Coogan and Judi Dench. Made me so angry that this happened. Just with I'd read the book first!

Everyone should see this film as it headlines the terrible things that happened to unmarried mothers and their children, particularly in Ireland. The Catholic Church has a lot to answer for. Hopefully this film will help to open up this can of worms, which the Catholic Church seems determined to hide from the world. The shocking thing is that the trafficking of these unfortunate children, to the financial benefit of the church was still going strong in the 1960s.
