A design flaw makes this plane worthless

I like draper tools, and can usually work with the balance you get between quality and price. This plane unfortunately has a design error that makes it worthless.

The cam in the lever cap clamp protrudes the same distance when open and closed, so it cannot fulfil its function (which it to tighten and clamp the irons in place, and to loosen them for dismantling).

(In the first picture above, with the lever at 90 degrees, there shouldn't be any metal visible between between the lever arm and the spring, it should only be visible in the second picture which shows the lever cap in the closed or clamped position - the metal presses against the spring to create the clamping pressure)

It looks like this plane was creating by copying another manufacturers product, and done by someone who doesn't know what all the parts of the plane do!

You can make the plane work for a few minutes by ignoring the clamp and tightening the screw, but this isn't a strong way of claiming the irons so it doesn't last long.

It will have to go back.

      A Plane

Having got rid of nearly all of my tools, I very late in the diy day found that a job needed doing which required a plane. Although reluctant to spend on something I'd already got rid of I had to bite the bullet. The plane worked a treat and produced a very satisfactory result, for which I feel no regret.

Would recommend but needs some work to set up

I can't quite get it to sit perfectly but I imagine that's my fault not the planes.

The wooden handles provide a really nice touch and you can tell as soon as you pick it up that it's good quality and hefty!

      Pros:
Quality build, pretty sure it will outlive me
Heavy, this gives it a sense of momentum and makes longer planes easier (in my oppinion)
wooden handles are a nice touch for this price point

      Cons:
Hard to get calibrated just right, but this could be on my part
      Needs sharpening before first use

      Works well

I bought this plane to reduce the width of a solid oak gate/door by about 5mm. It worked very well for this job. It arrived sharp and and all I had to do was lower the blade. Not having used a plane for many years (possibly since I left school 35 years ago) I was surprised by how well this worked.

Time invested = a great plane

Arrived in a plastic moulded cover which would give it no protection if dropped. A box would be better. Bkade was a good thickness and didint need alot of honing. The frog needed a bit of work but again this didnt take long ... aprox 1.5 hours work and its now giving me waffer thin ribbons leaving projects needing little to no sanding. Handle is plastic which i plan to replace with a wooden one .... wood just gives more feel and feedback ....like a leather steering wheel in a car

Solid plane and the wooden handles feel good

For the price it is what it is a inexpensive plane it'll get the job done when set up the wooden handles feel great honestly for the money even if it doesn't work for you as a go to smoother it will still make a more than adequate scrub plane mine came with an extra iron so I'll probably use it for both smoother and scrub until I've enough cash to splurge on a more expensive plane if I feel the need to but this little plane feels solid so who knows .

Reasonable product given the price point

It's cheap and you get what you pay for. The handles are uncomfortable and could do with some reshaping and smoothing, the mouth is not square to the plate and the blade is iffy quality and needs a lot of work. However after sharpening and tuning it does a reasonable job.In retrospect I should have paid more for a better quality product

Reasonably good tool which needs attention.

Top of the range smoothing planes can cost 3 or four times the price of this one so don’t expect a product that is precisely engineered and one that will work accurately straight out of the box. If you are prepared to “tidy it up” with a lot of grinding and sanding you will eventually end up with a usable tool. Nearly every component will require refining. If you don’t have the skills, time, patience and perseverance to knock off all the rough edges, you might be better advised to look for a more refined product at a higher price.

Probably worth the money for odd-jobbing

At first glance, a replica of a Stanley/Record No 4. Nicely made and finished, but not as efficient as the original makes. It tends to rattle a lot when in use, the blades seem too soft a steel as they sharpened within seconds, and the settings of iron and cap have to be spot on the have the blade projecting. Probably worth the money for doing odd jobs, or where the plane iron may get damaged, but not a serious contender for quality. The spare blade is useful since the steel is softer and a sharp spare saves the task of honing, as the first will blunt quickly.
