Works fine. Bought as a replacement for a years-old product ...

Works fine. Bought as a replacement for a years-old product from the same maker, which would probably still be working if I'd thought to oil the moving parts occasionally. I doubt if I'll ever need the CD shredder but the physical size & shape of the unit influenced my choice because of where it 'lives' by my desk.Even for home use I'd recommend avoiding 'consumer' products with plastic gear trains. They don't last very long. I got through several cheap ones before my previous Rexel cross-cut shredder, and that one lasted me best part of 20 years. If this one lasts me as long I'll be more than happy.

3 minutes continuous use maximum! 13 sheets! Then wait 30 minutes!

What a complete and utter shambles of a product this is.

You'll realise when you receive it and read the instructions that this is far from a "Pro" shredder.

The instructions tell you that it should not be used for more than 3 continuous minutes. If you do that, guess what happens? It overheats and the "thermal cut-off" stops it operating and you have to wait.....30 minutes! Half an hour? The cut-off kicks in after about 13 sheets of paper in my use of it. Then, if you wait 30 minutes, you'll have done 39 sheets in an hour - from a device that claims to be able to do 11 sheets at a time?

The cut-out will let the machine operate again after about 10 minutes but it will then stop again after no more than 5 sheets.

How on earth Rexel think this makes it a professional (by name only, I grant them that) shredder is completely beyond me.

I bought it on offer for £59. Had I paid that full £380 or whatever the usually charge for it, I would have been incredibly angry. The unit itself is heavy, noisy but looks well made. It is the technical capabilities of it that make it a complete let down of a machine.

In summary, if you want to spend £60 or £380, you're better off taking the money and putting it in a shredder actually capable of disposing of it for you!

Failed after just over a week.

We bought this product on 23 August. It performed very well in shredding paper, always using only one sheet at a time......for a little over a week. Then, inserting a credit card for the first time the thing began whingeing and grinding and after a few seconds came to a stop. Yes, it claims to shred credit cards, but not ours. I double checked that I had inserted a normal plastic card and that I had not inadvertently tried to shred a metal plate. No, it was a common or garden card.I realised that the machine had stopped because of the thermal cut-out, so I waited for about an hour and tried again. Great! It began shredding again but continued for about half a minute with no sign of stopping. Consequently, I followed the procedure in the instruction manual and turned it off, then put it into reverse. It continued whingeing and grumbling for several more seconds with no sign of the credit card re-appearing, so I stopped it again. I was unable to remove the card from either above or below the mechanism so tried once more switching to 'forward' and then after a pause to 'reverse', each time finding a continuous running of the mechanism without any progress. At that time I gave up the ghost, unplugged the machine and decided to return it as failing to function correctly.Fortunately, BargainFox offers an excellent no-quibble and paid-for return service. I cannot criticise them, of course, but would never buy another Rexel product. We shall order another shredder of different manufacturer from BargainFox .

HOPELESS - DON'T BUY - NB THIS SHREDDER DOESN"T NEED LUBRICATING OIL

      UPDATE: Sept 2016:

      HOPELESS MACHINE - DON'T BUY.

Doesn't handle any more than 5-6 sheets, not the 11 specified, and even then it struggles. It overheats VERY quickly causing the auto cutout to trigger and gets VERY HOT on the top of the machine where the motor is. It takes at least 15 mins to cool down before I can use it again.

Not what I expected or what the specification says. I'm absolutely not over-working this shredder at all.

Having read the various reviews I decided to buy this shredder and am pleased with it.

BEWARE: DO NOT BUY THE LUBRICATING OIL AS RECOMMENDED BY BargainFox - THIS ITEM DOES NOT REQUIRE LUBRICATION.

When my shredder arrived, on reading the Rexel instruction manual, it clearly states that this shredder does not require lubricant and if used, the warranty could be affected.

BargainFox should not be including in the 'Frequently bought with' section, lubricating oil and it should make it clear in the Shredder do's and don'ts document that oil isn't always required.

Fortunately for me, the oil hadn't been despatched so I was able to cancel that.

Hung out to dry by insulting customer service repair policy

This shredder worked OK for 6 months, before it started to struggle with loads half it's capacity, and then started to cut out after a few minutes of use. At this point I contacted Rexel's designated service and repair contractor ACCO, as instructed. They wrote to me and said I could send them the shredder for inspection, if they deemed the fault was not caused by a list of warranty exclusions - including that the machine hadn't been overloaded, fed inappropriate materials or maintained properly... all of which seems impossible to determine!!!! - then they would repair it. If they decided that any warranty exclusions applied (which is basically down to them to 'deem') then they would either repair the machine at a as=yet-to-be-quoted cost (no clue as to how much but probably a lot) or return the machine 'unaltered at a cost of £39.95 excluding VAT' (total £47.94). That's almost as much as the machine cost me in the first place. So, basically, take a gamble that we aren't going to say 'you misused the machine' and if the gamble fails we'll charge you nearly fifty quid just to send it back to you. What a slap in the face. The shredder finally stopped working altogether a few weeks ago. It's now at the dump for a cost of £0 and I've bought a shredder from WHSmiths - same spec for half the price - who said if there's anything wrong bring it back at a cost of £0 and they'll replace it for free - sum total, £0 and no insulting, patronising customer service either. My advice, don't buy a shredder through BargainFox.

EXCELLENT Value Shredder - more than fit for purpose!!

This shredder replaced one that had lasted me since 2004. It looks good, has a surprising bin capacity and the cross cut shredded paper is both consistent and small enough to deter criminality. It's not as loud as some reviews would suggest and sits unobtrusively in my kitchen diner - its well rounded construction is a bonus.

Great if you pamper it a little

This is my second of this model, which I’ve now had for a year. The first failed very quickly, and I tried to replace it with another popular make. It was worse, so I rather reluctantly decided to give this one model another go. I have since shredded 30 years’ worth of paper (half a room-full), and the shredder is no worse for the wear. My advice? Don’t overheat it, don’t overfill the paper bin, and don’t stuff too many papers into the shredder. If it labours, try fewer sheets next time. It doesn’t seem to heat up quite as quickly if it doesn’t labour, and I’ve managed to run it much longer than the indicated times by taking extra care to empty the paper bin more often and feeding fewer pages at a time. Makes for a much more pleasant shredding marathon. It is fairly quiet compared to the competition, and looks better too.

      Great home shredder

The shredder was bought to replace a Fellows model which had been used for the last 5 or so years but gave up the ghost last weekend. In comparison this model is smaller and quieter to the Fellows of a similar spec. It also has a smaller cut than the Fellows which is better for security.

I have found that the automatic paper sensor does need a positive push and as a result it works fine on a sheet of paper but often ignores a receipt unless it is folded over double. It handles credit cards (one at a time) and does slow down when you feed one in. The instructions recommend feeding the card in side on to reduce the strain on the shredder but to me this is not recommended from a security point of view as you will end up possibly with your name surviving intact. A simple remedy so as not to strain the blades/motor too much is cut the card in half and then feed each bit separately with you name/details running across the cutter.

In all a good shredder, losing a star because shredding single receipts could be a bit simpler.

As others have mentioned the bin is accessed from the side and pulls out. I haven't had any problem as yet of material falling inside the equipment when the bin is removed.

Get it to the right address!

The shredder looks like an exact copy of my previous one. I have already tried it and it works well.HOWEVER, the only reason I have it is that a resident in a house about 40-50 yards away in another street and in a housewas asked to take it in as the next door neighbour was out. Were it not for the honesty of this chap I would never have received it. The courier must have his own reasons for not paying attention to addresses. There must be ways of controlling this sloppy behaviour.

      Ideal home/small office small-batch shredder

The shredder does pretty much what is says on the tin. A handful of observations:- 11 sheets? Not a hope. I found that any more than 7 (80gsm or less) or 3 (fancy paper such as Conqueror) sheets would cause rapid overheat and frequent jams. Little and often worked well. The optimum (heat versus time) seems to be 2 sheets.- The auto-restart is very handy. Work the shredder until she stops herself then once she is cool enough she will recommence giving you a useful signal that you're good to go.- If you're not against the clock with a mammoth shred-session I found that leaving it for a couple of extra minutes after the cool down paid dividends in actual total time taken to shred a large amount.- Keep an eye on the bin. If it gets a little full it is tricky to pull out and I found a couple of times I had to half pull it out, grab handfuls of chaff (making a god-awful mess in the process) to make some space to get the bin out. The price, I guess, of not being a flip-top.All in all, good value for money but needs a couple design tweeks in my view to get 5 stars.
